Handwork

We are very lucky in St Andrews Primary to have lots of people from the community who come in to help us with our handwork on Thursday afternoon every week (in Terms 2 and 3). 

 

When we start at school we learn how to sew by making mats. We need to make two mats before we can start to learn how to knit. We are all learning to knit in Class 4 now - some of us are knitting scarves, others are knitting purses and others are knitting teddies.

       

It needs a lot of concentration to knit - and sometimes we are a little too chatty and this is when we make mistakes!

Mehndi

Class 4 have been learning about Mehndi patterns in Religious and Moral Education.  Ms Shiner had Mehndi patterns drawn onto her hands at the weekend and came to let us see what they were like today.  This is what they look like ...

Sport Education

We have finally started Sport Education this term, and are learning to play frisbee.  This is a slightly different way of learning to play sports, where we are more in charge of what we are learning and how we improve our skills.  These are some of the most important bits about sport education:

• We work in teams of 4 or 5, so everyone takes part and gets to play;
• We all have a special job that we have to do - the jobs are warm-up coach, coach,  manager and equipment manager;
• When we are not playing a game we act as time keepers, referees, score keepers and lines-people.

There are different partss to a sport education lesson.  These are:

1. We work in our teams to warm up;
2. Ms Rendall gives us some advice on the skills we need to work on;
3. We work in our teams to practice the skills we need to improve;
4. We play the game.

This is a video of one of our warm up sessions - the warm-up coach is responsible for leading this session and letting us know what we have to do.

These videos shows us working together to try to improve our skills - we are working on throwing and catching the frisbee.

 

 

 

One of the most important things we are learning in sport education is that everyone should be able to take part, and that this is more important than winning.  It is also about sharing our skills and helping others if they are finding something tricky.  We are also learning about more than just how to play a game because we have different jobs that we need to do as well as playing the game.

Norwegian visitors

We were very lucky at St Andrews on Wednesday afternoon and had some Norwegian visitors come to the school to perform a concert.  Here is the last song they performed - if you would like to see more let us know as it is all taped!

Children in Need

Mrs Kirkness and Primary 3 did a fantastic job of arranging activities for Children in Need again this year and organised lots of different activities for everyone to take part in.  Some of the activities included:

fun games and competitions

wearing our pyjamas to school

face painting

bake sales at break times

getting our photos taken with Pudsey

karaoke

We are really proud of ourselves at St Andrews Primary because we raised £728.21 altogether!  This was a fantastic total - well done and thank you to all the staff and parents who helped!

Book reviews

We were writing our own book reviews this week.  This was new for us and we found it a little bit tricky!

These are the things we had to think about when writing this:

• the author - who wrote the book?
• the characters - who were the people in the story?  Did we like them?  How did they make us feel?
• the plot - what happens in the story? 
• our opinion - did we like the book?  What was our favourite part of the story and why?  Were there any funny or scary bits?  Did we learn anything?
• recommendation - do we think someone else would like to read the book?  Why do we think this?

Pudsey visits St Andrews

Wow - we had a surprise visit from a very special person today ...

 

Primary 3 were doing their Assembly this afternoon when there was a knock at the door - and Pudsey arrived!  We were all so excited and can't wait until he comes back on Friday!
