Red Nose Day 2013

Primary 2 and Mrs Dass worked very hard this year to organise Red Nose Day.  They had their Assembly the week before and told us what Red Nose Day is all about and the reasons for raising money for this. 

 

On Red Nose Day there was a sale in Primary 2's classroom - everyone had been asked to bring in toys / books etc that they no longer played with and these were sold so that other people could play with them.  There was not a single thing left at the end of the day - which is amazing when you look at the amount of things for sale in the morning!

St Andrews School raised £791.89 altogether - well done everyone, and especially well done to Primary 2 and Mrs Dass.  Thank you!
 

Portacabin arrives!

We have been bursting at the seams in school this year and sometimes there just hasn't been enough space for everyone!  We are hoping the arrival of our portacabin last week will help with this.  It arrived after school so it was only the adults who saw the crane taking it into the playground.  Luckily Leesa took some photos so we could see what was happening!

Visit to the Power Station

We have been learning about different sources of energy this term, looking at both renewable and non-renewable energy sources.  As part of our learning, we visited the Power Station in Kirkwall and saw what happens there.  We all learned lots of new information and found it really interesting.  Here are some photos of us on our visit for you to have a look at:

David Smith MBE visits St Andrews

We had a very exciting visitor at school today!  David Smith is a Scottish paralympian (from Aviemore) who raced in the mixed coxed four with crewmates Pamela Relph, Naomi Riches, James Roe and Lily van den Broecke (cox).  The crew finished in first place, over two seconds ahead of Germany and won the race.  They were all awarded MBEs in the 2013 New Year Honours list.

David spent some time this afternoon telling Primaries 4, 5, 6 and 7 about his life and how he came to win a gold medal in the Paralympics in London last year.  We all enjoyed hearing about how he overcame his disability to win an Olympic Gold Medal. 

We hope David will inspire everyone to always do their best, and never to give up - no matter how difficult things are.

Health Week - 4 & 5 February 2013

It seems a long time ago now but we had a special two days earlier this term, where all the classes were mixed up and spent time in different classes.  Primaries 2, 3 and 4 were mixed up so Mrs Kirkness, Mrs Dass and Ms Rendall had completely different classes!  The theme of the two days was friendship and we did a variety of activities to help us understand this better.  It was fun to have everyone working together and helping each other.  Some of the activities we did were:

• working in groups to make our own Punch and Judy show where Punch and Judy had a fight and someone helped them become friends again;
• everyone writing one nice thing about everyone else which meant we all had a very long list of nice things about ourselves;
• working together in small groups to solve problems, for example we all closed our eyes and held hands and then had to work together to untangle ourselves and make a circle.

Football training

We have been lucky this term to have football training for 6 weeks.  We have been learning lots of new skills including dribbling, passing, controlling the ball and shooting.  It is very tricky to keep control of the ball!  We had to play football outside on Tuesday this week because the stage is set up in the hall - it was VERY cold!

Rubgy in all weather!

Bruce has been coming to St Andrews every week for the past 5 weeks to teach us how to play tag rugby.  It is a lot of fun and we have to go out in all different weathers - even if it is snowing!  We have been learning about passing, defending, swerving, diving, dodging, side-stepping, catching and holding the ball, scoring a try, rolling passes, tagging each otherand running onto the ball when someone passes to you.  There is lots to remember!  Please check out our slide show to see us in action:
